There was a water leak on June 10 from the Khisorak dam in Shakhrisabz district of Kashkadarya province, the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations said.
Reportedly, this happened during engineering and technical measures to open an additional tunnel on the left side of the dam.
“To address the accident, an operational headquarters was formed chaired by the leadership of Uzbekhydroenergo, consisting of the province’s governor, heads of emergency situations, police department and other organizations, all necessary engineering measures are being taken using special equipment,” the statement added.
The situation is under the control of the Ministry of Emergency Situations. There is no damage to the dam. There were also no casualties.
“Dear citizens, there is no reason for unnecessary concern. The situation is under full control,” the ministry noted.
Footages surfaced on social networks showing the release of water from the dam and the increased water level in the river.
"The local people are massively leaving the area in fear of going underwater, as it happened in Sardoba dam in Syrdarya province. And these people want to build a nuclear plant", said one of the locals who was fleeing the area with his family.
